Artists…managers…listen up!
There’s been a change to the submission process for the artist-related categories at the Stylus DJ Awards this year. In past years the public voted for songs (i.e. submitted themselves) and those with the most votes ended up making the categories. This year, the artists/producers need to submit themselves. There are also 3 new categories added to make the artist awards way more well rounded overall (def a great look). It’s FREE to submit so all it’s costing you is about 5 minutes of your time. Here are the categories that require artist submission:
Canadian Dance/Pop Single of the Year *NEW CATEGORY*
Wow, this is f*cked up news. Met dude a couple times at the Core DJ retreats on his grind. Seemed like a real down to earth guy. Condolences to his friends and family. R.I.P. From HHC:
Montreal, QC – Another sad day for Canadian hip-hop… a sad day for music. While Montreal police have yet to confirm the identity of the man that was found dead in Little Burgandy early Saturday, Bad News Brown aka Paul Frappier’s brother Louis Frappier has confirmed that it was in fact the body of the talented rapper/harmonica player that was recovered. He was found at Richmond and William Sts. close by Lachine Canal and was pronounced dead on the scene. Police cited violence to his upper body but would not confirm if the death was a result of a gunshot wound.
Bad News Brown had become a fan favourite in Montreal and he had been opening for some of the biggest names to come through the city including Snoop Dogg, 50 Cent, Kanye West and most recently, New York’s Red Café (January 9 ). His unique harmonica-only based music video “Reign” has picked up over 300,000 views and it’s a great demonstration of his musical ability. Click here if you haven’t seen it. His 2009 album Born 2 Sin was well received and fans were anticipating his new material. This past summer he was featured on the huge “Expos Fitted (Remix)” by Magnum 357 along with the rest of the who’s who of Montreal hip-hop. Just a few examples of the many things that had made Bad News Brown one of the most promising artists to try and “make it” out of Real City. He was only 33. The world has been robbed of an extremely talented and hard working artist and we’re very saddened by the news. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Frappier family during this difficult time. Toronto, ON – Hip-hop lives as we live the culture. While Canada hasn’t historically topped the charts, hip-hop is very much alive in the north. We’ve never pretended we were short on critics, but the enthusiasm, energy and progress shown over the past decade is proof of progress on all sides of the culture. With that, Hip-Hop Ain’t Dead It Lives In The North Volume 3 will be available for download on February 7th!
The third installment of this series is birthed from the cultural clothing brand of the same name. Well established as a powerful idea, It Lives In The North uses the music to prove the message once more.
DJ Dames Nellas, known for his incessant cross country touring, orchestrates the mixtape which features over thirty artists including Kardinal Offishall, Rich Kidd, Classified, Drake, P. Reign, Belly and Luu Breeze. Even a few artists from south of the boarder made the cut on collaborations like “Making A Killing” by Vado and Luu Breeze and “In The Morning” by J. Cole and Drake.
“This mixtape is an overview of the kind of dope music coming out of Canada,” says DJ Dames Nellas (www.theofficialdj.com). “There really isn’t a dull moment and I hope people internationally catch the vibe.”
This volume also includes exclusive tracks from Rock Da House and Bishop Brigante along with unique interludes featuring King Of The Dot battle rappers and a conversation between It Lives In The North founder Jonathon “Bizz” Brown and the legendary hypeman/rapper Spliff Star.
It Lives In The North co-owner, Jesse Plunkett offered his take on the mixtape: “For years now It Lives In The North has strived to promote Canadian hip-hop and implement a sense of pride, via a widespread fashion statement, for the talent and culture that exists in Canada. The latest volume of our mixtape does just that and Dames Nellas is the perfect DJ to have on board for the project. It’s worth the FREE download.”
Rap category is pretty solid (didn’t take in the Ghettosocks) but gawd damn the R&B category is BRUTAL. WTFFF. Either our R&B singers aren’t submitting for the Junos (which is very possible) or the R&B selection committee needs a serious upgrade (which is VERY possible)…???
Rap Recording of the Year:
D-Sisive – Vaudeville
Drake – Thank Me Later
Eternia & MoSS – At Last
Ghettosocks – Treat Of The Day
Shad – TSOL
R&B/Soul Recording of the Year:
Karl Wolf – Nightlife
Keshia Chante – Test Drive
Quanteisha – Stars
Raghav – So Much feat. Kardinal Offishall
Silver (aka Solitair) – Come True feat. Kardinal Offishall
Anyways, get the full list of nominees here. Drake leads the way with 6 (album of the year, artist of the year, songwriter of the year, single of the year, rap recording of the year and the Juno fan choice award). Drizzy will also be hosting the awards show which is taking place here in Toronto (i.e. should be a crazy weekend!).
And on another note…in a year like this, they definitely need a category for Rap Single of the Year as opposed to just the one Rap Recording of the Year category (which is basically Rap Single or Rap Album). That way you could easily have a category with the likes of JD Era, Luu Breeze, Shaun Boothe, Rich Kidd, Saukrates etc…etc…etc…

If there’s one thing that quickly becomes apparent in having a conversation with Wes ‘Maestro’ Williams, it’s that he’s always passionately aware of linking the past to the present, and the future.
Case in point: While travelling to a recent keynote speaker engagement in Hamilton, Ont. to promote his new book Stick to Your Vision: How to Get Past the Hurdles and the Haters to Get Where You Want to Be, Williams took time to reflect on a pioneering African-Canadian figure. “On my way to the lecture, I had to get on the Lincoln Alexander Parkway,” he says. “So, while I’m driving, I’m thinking, ‘That’s a brother right there who’s from Canada.’ You have to admire the contribution that he’s made in order for his community to name a parkway after him. You feel me?
“That’s the first Black Member of Parliament in Canada and it just reinforces how far we’ve gone as a people, as Canadians, and how far I still have to go. It’s not like I want a bridge or nothing, but the fact is we can still continue to make contributions.”
