VIDEO: Drake Talks "Light Up" Collabo with Jay-Z

Drake recently sat down with MTV News in his Canadian hometown and explained how the song, produced by Tone Mason and co-produced by his October’s Very Own cohort Noah “40″ Shebib, came to fruition.

The track will be included on the rapper’s forthcoming debut, Thank Me Later, tentatively slated for a March release.

“When I heard that beat, the drums that they had come up with, it was like, ‘Man, this is a moment,’ ” he said. ” ‘This sounds like where I’m at in my life.’ So, we took it and 40 did what he does to pieces of music that I see potential in — he took it to the next spot. Jay-Z’s on it. The song is phenomenal. It’s done now.”

The pair previously worked together on Jay-Z’s “Off That,” from Hov’s The Blueprint 3 project.

The Timbaland-produced track, however, only featured Drake on the hook instead of contributing a verse alongside Jay. This time, the two MCs both had their say on “Light Up.” Though upstart MC was able to recruit the Roc Nation head into the fold for his first album, in addition to expected collabos with Lil Wayne and Kanye West, Drake said he’s trying to downplay the guest list and focus on his humble beginnings.

Another great example of how in today’s “lawless” Internet world you can not only spit a verse over a hot beat but also make some simple but effective visuals to it. This should be the minimum for any new artist. This is my first time hearing of dude but from listening to the verse I have deducted that he’s from MTL and knows all the DJs there lol. Shouts to all my MTL Core DJs! Kwite Sane what up!

Shouts to my man Ruiz from MadRuk Entertainment for posting these clips. I was initially hesitant to post them as the music was secondary to the clips (as opposed to the clip below) BUT after more thought I figured these are still a great example of how artists can diversify and get some exposure in a whole new market. Getting your music placed in ads, TV shows, viral campaigns etc…used to be TABOO in hip-hop but these days it’s a necessity with hopes of reaching as many people as possible virally and/or otherwise. 2oolman & Scorsese’s clip is under the hood.

DOCUMENTARY: The Revival (Women in Hip-Hop feat. Eternia)

hyperadmin | Video | Monday, December 28th, 2009

Bahamadia’s Kollage is still one of the dirtiest hip-hop albums! Here’s all the info on the doc which also features Eternia:

The Revival gives a candid glimpse into the first meeting of legendary Hip-Hop pioneer Roxanne Shante and veteran Philly emcee Bahamadia, as they trade stories of their struggles and triumphs in the industry over their long careers. It shows the exchange of lessons between them and up-and-coming artists DJ Shortee, Eternia, Stacy Epps and Invincible. This short documentary, a collage of performances and behind the scenes footage, was filmed by Invincible while on the road in Europe as part of We-B Girlz all women independent Hip-Hop tour. The largest all female Hip-Hop tour of its kind, it spanned over three weeks, six countries, and featured dozens of female artists who performed for tens of thousands of supporters.

Co-presented by TheFembassy.com which features follow-up interviews with the artists from the film.

Video: The Real Frequency Top 25 Hip-Hop Albums of the Decade with Kardinal Offishall!

hyperadmin | Music,Video | Monday, December 28th, 2009

Mr. International, Kardinal Offishall joined us (the Real Freqs) this past Monday to co-host and discuss our countdown of the Top 25 Hip-Hop Albums of the past Decade! The order and rankings of the albums is obviously up for debate, so let us know what you think. Before you do that though, consider the following criteria we used to build this list:
1. ARTISTRY: Did the album move you in a completely different way with the beats and rhymes?
2. IMPACT: Would the 2000’s have been the same without this album?

Really tough call on the Jay/50; I see both sides but i guess a tie wasn’t possible.
