Via NR. J. Cole addresses being called “the new Drake” by Sarah Taylor on MuchMusic when he was in town for the Jay concert. Funny.
“It’s nothing you can do about those comparisons… I know it comes from a place where people don’t really know. It’s one of those things where they think “this guy reminds me of XYZ” because that’s the hot guy that’s on their mind right now. I remember a couple of years ago, people was saying Lupe cuz that’s who they was hearing about.
Once people get into the music, it’s like “oh wait, no he’s not.” But like I always say, he’s talented so it’s not a diss really. It’s all good. But the Toronto joint was crazy, ha. She said it, I was like [-__-]. She didn’t mean anything by it. [Interviewer: It’s kinda funny how the blogs ran with it.] Yeah, it was a real expression… I can’t believe they caught that on-camera.”

Killawatt Records was born of necessity and chance; when Red1 ventured to release a project independent of the influential Rascalz crew, he was offered the opportunity to start his own label but retain major label distribution. April 2004 saw the creation of one of Canada’s most innovative and visionary musical projects: Killawatt Records.
Gathering talent from all coasts of Canada, Killawatt is as much a mentorship initiative as it is a label; “I had learned so much as part of the Rascalz,” explains Red, “so many highs and lows, mistakes that young artists make again and again that I felt I could probably help some up-and-coming artists avoid those same pitfalls.”
Honestly, getting persucted for not going “off the top” is so played out. Historically speaking the “freestyle” started as a written expression anyways. Via NR!
And if you missed it (apparently we did), the video of Drake kickin’ a verse from Thank Me Later at his b-day party in Houston is below the jump!
