NEWS: Manifesto Needs Your Help! VOTE NOW!

hyperadmin | Video | Monday, November 9th, 2009

I don’t know the severity of the situation but I definitely know that we take for granted how much goes into a festival like this behind the scenes. All you gotta do is make your vote count once per day!!! Via TRF:

The Manifesto Festival has entered the Aviva Community Fund in attempt to raise funds to to produce another stellar urban music & arts festival in Toronto for 2010. While the festival has been able to scrape by the past three years on government grants and corporate sponsorship, the funds are limited and cannot provide the proper support needed for the festival to grow year after year.

We ask you to please take 2 minutes to and cast your vote to show your support for the largest hip hop festival in Canada. You can vote once a day for the next 8 days until the contest closes. The goal is to raise win this contest in order to properly pay staff, artists and increase the scope of the festival for next year. No one else is gonna put us on, so we gotta put ourselves on – Toronto, support your own! – Phil

Hip Hop Dubsters Grand Analog Open This Year's Make Some Noise Series

hyperadmin | A City In Focus | Saturday, November 7th, 2009

When you think of the hushed, brightly-lit innards of your friendly neighborhood library, surely the last thing that comes to mind is the raucous sound of live club music, but that’s exactly what went down this past thursday as dubcentric hip hop crew Grand Analog kicked off this year’s Make Some Noise series at the Toronto Public Library’s College/Shaw branch. Beats, breaks, and bass licks were the order of the day as GA invited library goers inside their bottom heavy world with a humorous, hour-longs session, direct from the most appropriate of spaces — the kid’s section.

Some visual proof as to why 9th Wonder said this. From TRF:

A bit late getting to this post, but here it is.  This was probably the craziest party I’ve ever been to.   Short of people wilding out at 3:30am on a Sunday in a club that was trying to get everyone out the door to close up (RE: lights were turned on and the bar was closed for an hour and a half), there were a ton of special guests in the house.  Talib, 9th Wonder, Jeru, Tona, Notes To Self, Mindbender, Brassmunk, and a slew of other (way too many to mention) were there to witness Hi-Tek, Skratch Bastid, Rich Kidd, Sauks, Mercilless and Wristpect tear Revival down.  Peace to Manifesto. -Phil

NEWS: DJ Dopey Gets HIV Test to Educate About HIV / AIDS

hyperadmin | News | Friday, November 6th, 2009

Big shouts to an organization called The 411 Initiative For Change which is a national youth led not-for-profit organization and a registered charity producing social justice themed arts programming. They do shows targeted at high-schools revolving around AIDS, Black History Month, Asian Heritage Month, Women’s Struggles & Successes and more. For more info check out www.whatsthe411.ca and check out their latest official press release featuring the legendary (and all around nice guy) DJ Dopey:

Nov 6, 2009. Toronto – DJ Dopey (Jon Santiago) from MTV Live (MTV Canada) has teamed up with youth organization The 411 Initiative For Change (411) to promote HIV testing to young Canadians. There are 60,000 people in Canada living with HIV it is estimated that 27% of the people infected are undiagnosed. Globally young people account for 50% of new HIV infections.

Dopey got an HIV testing diary at the Toronto Hassle Free Clinic allowing 411 film this personal experience. Now Dopey is taking time out of his busy schedule to talk to young people about his testing experience, encourage them to get tested.

“Canadian teens don’t know that testing is confidential or that it is free,” explains Dopey. “They don’t even realize that HIV infection is a risk for them due to things like unsafe sex and drug use. There is a lot of misinformation I hope to be able to clear up.”

Dopey will take part in a World Aids Day presentation for young audiences to discuss his testing experience on Dec 1, 2009 with presentations at 10:00am and 1:00pm at the Al Green Theatre, Miles Nadal JCC – 750 Spadina Ave, Toronto.

In the spring of 2010 Dopey will travel to high schools and colleges across Canada as part of a 411 HIV/AIDS education program. Dopey will talk with over 20,000 young Canadians about the importance of HIV testing.

“Many young Canadians are surprised to learn that in Canada 12 people are infected with HIV every day,” explains Sterling Downey, President of 411. “Getting a young celebrity like DJ Dopey to get tested on camera and to talk to young people across Canada about this is really powerful.”

Dopey a Filipino-Canadian has won the most prestigious titles available to a DJ: the 2003 World DMC Champion, 2002-2003 Vestax Canadian Champ and 2001 Allies All star Beat-Down Challenge Champion among others.  Currently Dopey can be seen daily on MTV Canada’s flagship program “MTV Live” spinning music videos.  Dopey is also a member of Toronto based rap group Notes To Self.
