Y’all already know my stance on this topic and the importance of always receiving TANGIBLE returns for your music.
Here’s some more practical fuel to the argument from Mic-Control co-founder Jon Ostrow.
At this point, most emerging artists are familiar with the (potential) benefits of giving their music away for free:
- Maximizes the possibility of discovery
- Free Advertising
- Can create viral-buzz about your music
But in reality, unless you already possess a large fan-base along with the subsequent reach, giving your music away will be the last you hear from most new “fans.” This situation is only ideal for artists who have successfully converted people from fans to loyalists – those who not only want to share this music with others, but who actively seek out others who share a common interest in the music. If you are not at this level on a large scale, consider using a slightly different strategy.
What you need, is a way to turn this seemingly one-sided transaction, into one that is mutually beneficial. You essentially want to continue charging for your product, but in a way that replaces value in terms of money with that of brand growth. Consider charging for your music using social currency, which would put you in the position to receive a tangible return that would increase your reputation and reach, rather than increase your bank account.

Eternia & MoSS | GOODBYE | Executive Producer: Fat Beats | Directed by Mark Carranceja of Noisemaker Media |
Eternia & MoSS return with the 1st Solo Music Video offering from the critically acclaimed album, “AT LAST”! ‘GOODBYE’ is a tale of industry vs. art through the eyes of Eternia, wherein she learns to trust her struggle, backed by MoSS’s post-apocalyptic, end-of-the-world sonic imagery.
Director Mark Carranceja creates the post-apocalyptic atmosphere by showcasing a depth in presentation that is uniquely inherent to his set of technical aesthetics and creative vision. GOODBYE is a visual force that captures Eternia’s final testament to the world and is a visceral experience that examines humanity’s fear of death, disappointment, loneliness and isolation.

Let it rock b*tches. A-Game finally drops the video for their club banger, “Airplanes”! Peek under the hood for a behind the scenes look at the vid courtesy of Champ Magazine as well!
This time last year, Toronto’s twin rap duo A-Game had the summer going crazy with their first single “Go Head Shawty”. Earning them 300, 000 views on Youtube to date, Seeing that their first single was such a success, the boys of A-game knew that they had to make another single. The start of the new decade seen the twins releasing their sophomore dance-friendly record “Airplanes” produced by T-Minus.
Since the release of “Airplanes” the club banger has been featured on numerous countdowns as well as receiving heavy rotation from torontos own radio flow 93.5. Thanks to the high demand and positive feedback of the song, it was only fitting that a video should be made. The video was shot mid-May by super director Aaron A (who has also directed for Nelly Furtado, Down With Webster, etc). A-Game’s official DJ Spoonz and platinum producers Tone Mason among others made it out, and also appeared in special cameos for the video.
The boys are currently in the studio working on their PilotModeMuzik EP which is due fall of this year which sees production from Boi 1da, Bass Line, T-Minus, Megaman, & Tone Mason.
