Maybe it’s just the word that’s played out (like ‘swag’) but I gotta be honest man, the ‘hater’ topic’s getting really hard to stomach on this side of the fence.
Not that I think it’s a myth.. I just think it’s something that, unless elaborated upon, comes across as unhealthy, counter-productive shadow-boxing.
I know artists gotta get things off their chest but I also think artists should stop for a sec and consider the effect these ambiguous ‘hate’ tirades have on the people that don’t hate them.
Especially when eeevrybody’s crying hate these days.
And even though this post prompted these comments it’s directed at every artist out there reaching for that ‘hate’ crutch.
Rich Kidd lets off Volume 4 of his “We On Some Rich Kidd Shiiit” series to the masses.
This one’s sub-titled “The Boiling Point” (props to Concrete Mob!) and quite frankly I don’t know how much longer the kid can go without being the next artist/producer out of The Mega to blow the f*ck up.
The features and co-production credits read like a contemporary list of the city’s high grade, on-the-come up talent, which is in itself a crazy accomplishment.
Full credit and tracklist after the jump!
Enjoy!
Oh, and for those that missed the last three installments in the series, get up-to-date HERE!
Siiiiiiiick! More (including tour dates) under the hood!
SHAD ANNOUNCES U.S. RELEASE OF LATEST ALBUM ON BLACK BOX RECORDINGS/DECON RECORDS OCTOBER 5TH
JUNO AWARD AND POLARIS PRIZE NOMINATED MC TO WIN OVER STATESIDE AUDIENCES
Vancouver based MC Shad prepares to storm the northern border with his highly acclaimed LP TSOL on October 5, 2010. The album, released earlier this year in his native Canada, will see a US release on Black Box Recordings/Decon and has already garnered wide praise including a nomination for the prophetic Polaris Music Prize. Moving forward, he sets his sights on American audiences, eager to connect with existing fans, and tell his story to virgin ears.
The son of Rwandan immigrants, Shad invested time into his craft while growing up in London. Reared on the sounds of American hip-hop while diligently pursuing an education, his character is an even-keeled amalgam of these influences, glaringly manifested on the introspective, multi-faceted TSOL.
While an initial listen to TSOL will immediately lead one to believe that it’s an immense hip-hop achievement, such sentiments merely scratch the surface. Shad’s third album is a self-effacing commitment to the art of rhyme, as evidenced on the soulful singles “Rose Garden” and “Yaa I Get It.” Later, he culls input from some of Canada’s most talented, notable musicians. Brendan Canning and Lisa Lobsinger of indie-rock mega-conglomerate Broken Social Scene to lend vocals and instruments to “Lucky 1’s” while Canadian hip-hop staple Classified offers up a brash slab of a beat on “A Good Name”.
Shouts to MadRuck Entertainment for bringing a different perspective to Rich Kidd’s Vol. 4 release party last week at Revival. In this clip we get a look at the green room before the show (cameos from Tanika Charles, Tona, Boi-1da, Jordan Croucher, Rich Kidd and more) and catch Sinotra warming up before hitting the stage. Look for Sinotra to start dropping material real soon (right Adi? lol).

I remember working with Rich at my spot, it was the second or third time we had hooked up. Rich just had just recorded “Ridin’ Solo” so we were chilling and vibing, I started going through beats.
I got through a few and “Boiling Point” came on…Rich simply said “keep it on this for a bit”…I obliged…turned up the volume, left the studio to go upstairs to tend to the slow simmering spaghetti sauce….Came back downstairs after about 10 minutes with more ice for the McGillicuddy’s and he was ready to record….Rich ran through his verse a few times and nailed it on the third or fourth take.
I was floored…It was on!!! I knew from that moment on that Rich Kidd is the truth. I produced “Boiling Point” back in ’94 and trust me I’ve heard a lot of verses from many MC’s being spit over the “Boiling Point” instrumental over the years. The original by Concrete Mob is a Canadian classic, but when I heard Rich go in on “Boiling Point” that day…he made it official in my mind…Rich is the cornerstone of the Toronto hip-hop movement that has so many eyes on it right now.
He spits like no one I’ve heard. His beats are some of the best coming of this beautiful city of ours. And if you were at the recent Rich Kidd show last week…you really know what’s up!! It’s simple. Just listen & pay attention…I always say that the music will speak for itself.
Nice look behind the scenes of Rich Kidd‘s new video for “Take It Slow” which should be out real soon. They premiered it at the Vol. 4 release party and believe me when I say that the video looks sick. Shouts to David F. Mewa who continues to smash the game (and continues to capture the smashing on his Flip cam lol).
