TED is a non-profit organization built on the understanding that ideas worth spreading can spark the necessary changes contemporary society needs.
In that spirit TedxToronto “brings together the city’s foremost thought leaders, change makers and everyday people from each discipline and challenges them to deliver powerful, unforgettable and unique TEDxTalks.“
This year’s TedxToronto conference takes place on September 30th @ The Glenn Gould Studios and features an array of speakers including Sol Guy and Boonaa Mohammed.
TedxToronto is all about talk, and we at OTA Live LOVE to talk (so much so that we created OTA Talk, lol) so when TedxToronto’sNeel Joshi approached us with the idea of pushing the boundaries of OTA Talk to speak on music from a more socially critical perspective, it didn’t take much convincing.
To that end, check us out tonight (Tuesday) for a special edition of OTA Talk as we invite Remix Project founder and TedxToronto co-chair Gavin Sheppard, and emcees Ian Kamauand Theo3, to discuss the role artists can play as empowered actors tangibly and constructively contributing to the social issues that fuel their art.
I mean, if music reflects life, most importantly the societal ills that affect our greater communities; and artists depend on life and those ills to be artists; is there a moral obligation on their part, as CITIZENS of their communities, to use their position as a platform for something more than just making music? Those questions and more will be on the table.
That’s OTA Talk tonight (Tuesday) @ midnight on OTA Live! and The New Flow 93.5 FM!
And thanks to two local guys, everyone’s showing their affection for the city across the planet by taking Polaroids of shirts that read: “1(heart symbol)T.O.”
Bryan Brock and his business partner Tyrone Edwards came up with the idea for the 1LoveT.O. shirts while working at the Re-Mix Project, a community initiative for youth living in at-risk neighbourhoods to become artists and entrepreneurs.
“It’s a lot different than when people see an I Love New York shirt,” Brock, 30, explained. “1LoveT.O. is basically celebrating everything that Toronto is, which would be bringing people together and making everything inclusive. When you say 1LoveT.O., it’s like Bob Marley, the idea of unity and bringing people together.”
Since 2007, and with the help of Twitter and their website 1LoveTO.com, the demand for the shirts spread across Toronto.
And to show Torontonian pride across the world, pictures on the website document people wearing the shirt in Ikebukuro station in Tokyo; in front of the L’Arc de Triomphe in Paris; on the Brooklyn Bridge; and rocking out to the Coachella Music Festival in California.
10 finalist’s have been chosen to compete for $5000 dollars in The Artreach Youth Art’s PITCH competition on September 20th. Each person will have 5 minutes to pitch there idea and win over the judges. Come out and support Your young local artist.

This is very random, I know, but seems like Gene Simmons from the legendary rock group KISS came to T.O. recently and fell in love with Reema Major. Not in a R. Kelly kind of way, but you know what I mean. Hmmm….Gene Simmons working with a 15-year-old female rapper from Toronto? Intriguing…? Scary…? Only time will tell! Here’s some words from Gene himself:
Two days ago, I was in Toronto doing promotion and media for our first signing, THE ENVY…
While there, Universal’s Mark Spicoluk suggested that I meet REEMA MAJOR and Kwajo, head of G7 Records. We met at the hotel… and, well… I was awe struck. I’ve been around the music industry for 37 years. There is a phrase — maybe you’ve heard it…”EITHER YOU’VE GOT IT… OR YOU DON’T.”
And Reema Major has “it.”
She is all of 15 years old (!!!). She was born in a jail cell (!!!). She raps. She struts. She IS style. Reema, Kwajo and the G7 crew met to talk about our interest in signing Reema. And then we decided to go get some Starbucks, which was next door. The excitement that Reema caused was immediate and overwhelming. A crowd gathered right away. A television crew picked up on the excitement, and we were interviewed on the street. We, at Simmons/Universal, intend on putting the full court press on this ARTIST, which is what she is.
You will be hearing a lot about her. Remember her name – REEMA MAJOR.
