INTERVIEW: Redman Talks Saukrates w/ HipHopDX.com

hyperadmin | Interviews | Saturday, December 11th, 2010

In a recent interview with HipHopDX.com, Reggie got a chance to talk about Bigg Soxx (their history, upcoming plans etc…):

Within that Gilla House clique is an artist familiar to underground Hip Hop fans in Saukrates. The Toronto, Ontario-based emcee/prouducer/singer appeared on Reggie‘s “Lemme Get 2” and “Full Nelson.” Asked about their relationship, Red explained, “I met Saukrates a while ago…I heard his tapes [first],” referring to 1997’s The Brick House and 1999’s The Underground Tapes, which featured Common, Xzibit and O.C. Redman continued, “I got real familiar with his music and what he was doin’ up there in Canada and I liked the movement they got up there, that whole Circle movement. If you do your homework on Saukrates, you’ll see where Drake came from, as far as singing and rapping at the same time.” The two began working on albums together for Red’s 2001 effort, Malpractice, where Sauk produced “Uh-Huh.” “When I put Saukrates on, he had an album out – that they’re very familiar with in Canada, he’s got a fan-base up there. He wasn’t with a team, besides The Circle, but I knew he needed that pull. He’s still reaching for that too. He needs distribution. He has a hot album with Universal Canada, but we’re tryin’ to get him [exposed] down here in the states.” Redman hopes to change that domestic recognition as be brands Gilla House in coming years.

NEW ALBUM: Kawzee "Finally" (Clean & Dirty Versions) (Free Download)

Kawzee (which is short for Kamakaze) earned his moniker by wilding out as a youth and always finding himself in some sort of trouble from time to time. However these days he is far from the kid he used to be. Now balancing a professional career with being a homeowner, father and husband, one would think he’d have little time to juggle his musical aspirations along his daily responsibilities. In time he became to realize that music was more a hobby but still maintained his drive to complete his album.

He grew up with hip-hop. He watched it grow from what many called a ‘fad’ to the multi-billion dollar industry it is today. From early EPMD, Lord Finesse… to the Native Tongues movement… to Wu, Nas and Jay-Z, he’s always been close to the culture and it resonates strongly in his music. Not to say that his music is reminiscent of any of those artists, but it’s the respect of the craft and integrity he puts in his work that he values above all. It’s also a good reason as to why his LP ‘Finally’ took over 8 years to make… hence the name ‘Finally’. The album is a collection of tracks spanning from a variety of topics including the birth of his first child, relationships, suicide, child abuse and pop culture… all while still lacing the occasional banger making it an album he believes anybody can relate to. The album has been available for sale since October and to this date the feedback he’s received has been overwhelming. Different people all had different favourite tracks off the album making it a solid album front to back.

Kawzee has called upon the ‘who’s who’ of Canadian producers to set the perfect backdrop to his project. Rich Kidd, Tone Mason, Soundsmith, Vokab, Neenah, Davenport, 2oolman and Bluntologist all had a part in making this project what it is. The album also features many up and comers such as Emerson Brooks, Via Linez, Dax Flow, Pearl from Everything that Fly, Joe Buck, Relz, Mookie Wilson and more. All that coupled with his on point flow, potent punchlines and variety of concepts makes this an album people are sure to take in, listen and enjoy. Good music lives!

Dirty and Clean versions of the album are NOW AVAILABLE for FREE DOWNLOAD.

Lotus lays a little something over the Dilla/Raekwon joint. Apparently he did this a bit back before “10 Bricks” even dropped but the cold weather inspired him to let it out. Either way good on you!
