INTERVIEW: Jully Black w/ Lola Plaku

hyperadmin | Interviews | Monday, November 30th, 2009

Miss Lola chops it up with the one and only Jully Black in this exclusive interview for Iluvlola.net! The Black Book is in stores now!!!

Last week I had the chance to sit down with Canadian R&B singer Jully Black. I had met her two years ago at the annual DJ Stylus Awards in Toronto, where she won Canadian R&B single of the year for “DJ Play My Song.” It was a short meet though. Something along the lines of a photo opp in the media section.

This however, was a real sit down interview with the lady herself. The good people at Universal had set up a session for a group of bloggers in the city at Hammam Spa [602 King Street W.,Toronto] where we got manicures done while waiting for our turn for the interview.  I got to sit down with Jully first. I had only prepared a few questions as I thought I was going to be pressed for time. Jully was wearing all black everything, with her hair done nicely and a big smile on her face.

Watching her videos and seeing her perform, Jully comes off as a very strong woman, and while she is that and more, she is also very approachable and charismatic…oozing with confidence. I guess you’d have to have all that to be a host on prime time Canadian TV, for CTV’s E-Talk. Jully’s most recent interview as a reporter on the show was with Hip-Hop royalty: Jay z.

Drake 8

Seen on HHC!

From InsideVandy.com:

Throughout the year, The Recording Academy (the folks behind The Grammys) hosts a series of conversations with artists from all over the country. Last week, the Nashville chapter held a Q&A with hip-hop artist Drake, whose fascinating background and radio hits (such as this summer’s “Best I Ever Had”) have thrust him into the spotlight as the genre’s up-and-coming artist to watch. We sent guest writer and Recording Academy member Andrew Tritter to the program to take down what he could from the Academy’s conversation with the rapper who is poised to take over 2010.

INTERVIEW: Boi-1da Interview w/ Exclaim Magazine (By Tara Muldoon)

hyperadmin | Interviews | Thursday, November 26th, 2009

“Most people are surprised this is my studio,” jokes hip-hop producer Matthew “Boi-1da” Samuels, looking around at an empty basement equipped with a laptop, a mini fridge and an X-Box. A laptop is where Drake’s history making single “Best I Ever Had” was created? To say the least, what 1da lacks in a studio ensemble, he makes up for in talent and accessibility.

The Ajax, ON native started producing just a few years ago “out of boredom,” and has since turned his hobby to a career. At first, he got his beats into the hands of anyone he could in the Toronto scene, but it was his work with Kardinal Offishall and then Drake on “Best I Ever Had” that put him all over the charts, literally. “I’ve known Drake for years and we work really well together,” 1da says of how the single came to be. The two put blood, sweat and tears into the music and began to build a strong buzz. Around this time, Drake became Lil Wayne’s wonder protégé and was doing verses on Lil Wayne tracks; by the time Drake was set to release his free mixtape So Far Gone online in late 2008, there were already rumours of multi-million dollar record deal offers. The free download did so well that it was formally released on CD, which have sold over 300,000 copies to date. The lead single from So Far Gone was the Boi-1da produced “Best I Ever Had,” which topped the Billboard singles chart.

Captain Hooks 2

Tara Muldoon chops it up with Captain Hooks in this exclusive HHC interview:

Toronto, ON – Captain Hooks is a natural born star. Raised in Toronto but an obviously international talent, he knew from a young age he was meant to perform. With an array of features and bragging rights under his belt, such as a Hot 97 single debut in 2003 called “You Don‘t Want That“, he feels that this is his time to really take over. One look at his new video and you’ll see why . . .

INTERVIEW: Boi-1da Interview with HipHopCanada.com!

hyperadmin | Interviews | Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Toronto, ON – An essential foundation of hip-hop culture is the ability to identify mediocrity and then use creativity to exceed any previous standard. A combination of passion and admirable work ethic has proven to take our society to a whole new level- add a whole lot of heart, and you have the story of Canadian hip-hop.

Anyone who has remotely paid attention to the cycle of our urban community can easily spot that talent is plenty and structure has been minimal, however we’ve never lacked the desire to thrive. From Michie Mee, to Kardinal and now to the incredible story of Drake, we’ve lost a few things but never spirit.

Boi-1da has been an influential part of the current growth happening in our industry. As the beat maker behind the Billboard chart-topper “Best I Ever Had” and the current banger “Forever” featuring Kanye West, Eminem, Lil Wayne and Drake – 1da is creating an international presence. I had to chance to go to 1da’s house and really get a glimpse into what his world is like (Shout-out to his 10-year old brother, Mikey who does the best Lil Wayne impression).

HipHopCanada celebrated with Boi-1da on October 16th at Embassy nightclub in Toronto as he turned 23 years old.

HipHopCanada: Congrats on the Grammy pre-nominations – where were you when you first heard the news?

Boi-1da: I was in LA in my hotel room and then HustleGRL told me. I was shocked.

HipHopCanada: Who was the first person you told?

Boi-1da:
My sister.

HipHopCanada: How has your family responded to your success?

Boi-1da: Before they were sceptical that someone is going to make it when billions are doing it – but my dad has known Drake for years, so he sees the big things he’s doing. He finally acknowledges that we’re doing really successful things – except that my brother says I’m too famous to hang around with him.

HipHopCanada: What would you be if you weren’t a producer?

Boi-1da: I always wanted to be a basketball player until I discovered Pizza Pockets.

HipHopCanada: [Laughing] You were recently at the Timbaland listening party in LA, right?

Boi-1da: Yeah, and he has a track with Drake. As soon as it was played, the girls went crazy!

INTERVIEW: Jas Prince Talks Discovering Drake With Ozone Magazine

hyperadmin | Interviews | Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

Jas Prince is the son of J Prince (founder of legendary label Rap-A-Lot Records). Jas is following in the footsteps of his pops by being one of the young CEOs in the game. In this interview with Ozone Magazine’s Julia Beverly he talks about his family legacy, the biz and how he connected Drake with Lil’ Wayne. Via ILL but to read the full interview click here!

What was your involvement with Drake?
I found Drake on Myspace. I believe Myspace is the easiest way to find hot artists in every region. I was going through a bunch of artists and did a worldwide blast to find out who had the most hits. I came across Drake’s page; yellow boy from Canada. The first song I clicked on was “Replacement Girl” with Trey Songz, and I was like, “Damn, this nigga can rap!” I wondered if he was signed. He’s got a video, a song with Trey Songz.. no label? I sent him a message and introduced myself. A couple days later I got a response back. “No, I’m not signed.” He gave me his number and we talked for a while. In my mind, I’m like, “This boy is a star. He raps, sings, and acts.” So I’m pushing it to everybody, like, “I got this artist named Drake, and I’m gonna sign him.” I hit Wayne like, “Yo, bro. I got this artist I want you to hear.” Wayne kept pushing it back, like, “Yeah, yeah. Alright.”

Two years ago I did a concert [in Houston] on New Year’s Eve with Wayne. The next day, after the concert, we were chillin’ at the hotel and Wayne asked me to take him to the jewelry store. He jumped in my truck. All the time, I’m thinking about business, so I put in this Drake CD. He was feeling it, bobbing his head. Drake said some slick line, and Wayne was like, “Yo, who is this, man? This boy nice!” I said, “That’s the nigga Drake I been telling you about.” Then I played “Brand New,” a song where Drake is singing. Wayne was like, “Man, who is this?” I said, “That’s Drake!” He’s like, “Bro, he sings too? Man, call him right now. Get him on the next flight to Houston.”

I called Drake, and he was at the barbershop. He’s like, “Yo, this Drizzy,” and Wayne was like, “Yo, it’s Weezy.” He was kinda shocked. Wayne said, “Get on the next flight to Houston. I’ma holla at you when you get here.” Drake called me back like, “Was that Wayne for real?” He flew out the next morning and we went to the studio that night. The next day we got on the bus and rode from Houston to Atlanta. We had a long ride and got to talk over some things. That night we went to the studio, and that’s when he recorded “Forever” and “Stunt Hard.” From then on, it’s history.
