INTERVIEW: The Airplane Boys w/ TheSource.com

hyperadmin | Interviews | Friday, July 15th, 2011

Airplane-Boys---Source

The Airplane Boys continue building their buzz with a lil’ help from TheSource.com.

TheSource.com caught up with Toronto natives The Airplane Boys. Take a look at the who, what, and where of the life and times of The Airplane Boys.

Question: How did you come up with the name Airplane Boys and what does it mean?

Bon Voyage: Airplane Boys came about two years go, we use to be called rock steady, we were experimenting and growing at the time and we needed a name that kind of represented change and moving forward. We were joking around one day talking about flying and we said something about airplane boys and we were like okay yeah, that’s cool. Also my father (Bon Voyage) was a pilot and Beck Motely’s father was an aeronautical engineer, so it was also a way to show homage to them. We are in a sense living out their dreams, trying to fly and leap.

Question: Toronto is on one right now, with so many artist, Justin Bieber, Melanie Fiona, and Drake, how does it feel to see your city blow up like that? What is the music scene in Canada?

Beck Motely: It’s the water in Toronto, people in the states have a lot more opportunity out there especially in the music world.  In Toronto its like a jar you have to try and climb out of it.  Drake opened the door for us. There is pros and cons to Toronto, if you’re really that good you’ll stand out on your own. To stand out in the States coming from where we come from, can happen much quicker but the Toronto market is really saturated.

Bon Voyage: But we are really blessed to becoming out now, because of the Internet when things blow they will really blow.

Beck Motely: I don’t know if Bon and me are really in tune with things musically or what, but it seems there is this creative energy kicking around the world right now. Because there is a lot going on in Toronto that people don’t even know about, like a grenade that imploded or something.

INTERVIEW: Tanika Charles w/ Spinner.ca

hyperadmin | Interviews | Saturday, June 18th, 2011

Tanika-Spinners

Tanika will be performing live at Yonge & Dundas square tomorrow (Sunday, June 19th) at 6pm alongside Digable Planets and The Pharcyde! FREE SHOW!!!

Here’s a quick likkle interview she recently did with Spinner.ca.

In the year since Tanika Charles released her ‘What? What! What?!’ EP, the Toronto-based R&B singer has been playing show after show around the city. But, as her performances get bigger, Charles maintains that it’s the small club shows that best match the vibe of her soulful, spirited music. “You can connect with the audience so much more when you can actually see them,” she tells Spinner. “It gets really hot and sweaty, and that’s the best.” And her set-up is only going to get sweatier: Charles’ is currently working on her next album, due in the fall, which will be recorded live in the studio. Spinner caught up with Charles to talk about performing at NXNE, her angry alter ego Ms. Chawlz and her “real problem” with Frank Ocean.

Tell me about this album that’s coming out.

Right now I’m in the studio all the time working on demos. It’ll be a live album, so everything’s going to be recorded with a band off the floor. This is a bit different than the EP, which I worked on with producers from around the city, so it’s exciting for me because it’s going to have that really pure, thick, heavy, sexy Motown feel to it.

Is a live album an extension of you performing live so much in the past year?

Yeah, it is. I just feel better on stage when the music’s big. There was a while where I’d have two backup singers, a DJ and maybe a live instrument, but that’s not the sound I’m trying to portray here. I really want to have a classic, soul feel to it. Going forward, the songs I perform are always going to be with a band.

Have you played NXNE before? What are you most looking forward to?

I opened up for Platinum Pied Pipers in 2007 at the Sound Academy — wow, that was a while back. It was really exciting! I’m looking forward to sharing the stage with Digable Planets and The Pharcyde. They’re classic and I’ve never seen either of them live.

INTERVIEW: PG w/ HipHopCanada.com

hyperadmin | Interviews | Monday, June 13th, 2011

PG chops it up with HHC while promoting her debut release Elements of PG (which is available now!).

This young woman has an upside that is very real at this point. Her potential grows as her understanding of her own image and vocal talents develop. She’s a hybrid of vocal ability who transitions between rapping and singing with impressive ease. PG‘s first project entitled Elements of PG is on it’s way and has been preceded thus far by her latest video “Tune In” as well as several video blogs detailing her creative processes. Surrounded by a dedicated team and another graduate of The Remix Project, she gives HipHopCanada an earful in our latest Prolific Profile.

HipHopCanada: How do you define hip-hop, and where do you feel you fit into that definition?

PG: In my opinion Hip Hop is a form of expression. Like paintings and other forms of art, music is a way of articulating your feelings. I believe Hip Hop is no different and I fit into that definition because with my music I share my stories. It is my way of letting the people hear my life, my struggles, and my successes. It is also a way of escape for me, where I can creatively say all the things I may not be able to say when simply speaking.

HipHopCanada: What drives you to stay in a business that is rarely profitable and highly competitive?

PG: To begin, the love for music. Despite profit and competition, good music speaks to my mind, body and soul and I love me some good music. So even if I am making it for myself, music will always be with me. Secondly, I would say the support I get from the people who actually take time and listen to my music, and who love it. That makes me feel good and lets me know that I am doing something right, that’s motivating. In addition, the haters also motivate me to surpass all the negativity and strive to become a better artist to shut them up (LOL). Lastly, the fact that I know I am a great artist and the possibility to take my music to the next level gives me something to strive toward.

INITIATIVE: The Forgiveness Project w/ keynote speaker Wayne Barrow (June 5th @ Toronto City Hall)

hyperadmin | Community,Initiatives,Interviews | Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

F-You_Ad_05

I took a HEAVY scolding from Ms. Muldoon for not posting this event earlier, and it was well deserved.

For the record, this is an AMAZING initiative Tara and I really appreciate you taking the hip-hop discourse past the obvious strands to a new level of openness and maturity. This is arguably an unprecedented undertaking and hopefully gets the awareness and recognition it deserves.

Here are the particulars:

HIPHOP INDUSTRY HEAVYWEIGHT WAYNE BARROW ADDED TO THE F-YOU PROJECT LINE-UP

Event takes place June 5th, 2011, 3pm at Toronto’s City Hall. FREE EVENT.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

It is with great excitement that the F-YOU: Forgiveness Project team announces music industry powerhouse Wayne Barrow as the newest speaker added to the panel-based event.

Barrow is recognized as being the management force behind the careers of the Notorious B.I.G, Shyne and Nas, and most recently acclaimed hip-hop artist J. Cole. He also produced B.I.G’s biopic “Notorious”  which grossed over 75 million dollars. Hip-hop fans across the world consider Barrow, who works in partnership with his cousin Mark Pitts (R Kelly, Chris Brown, Usher), to easily be one of the core business men driving hip-hop culture today. He is currently the president of By-Storm Entertainment which includes a roster of #1 R&B artist Miguel, J.Cole and Toronto’s own Kardinal Offishall, among others.

Barrow is just as passionate about giving back as he is about his business – he is the Vice Chairman of The Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation which is a charitable organization established by Ms Voletta Wallace to provide educational tools; books, computers and tutorship to inner city youth. Joining the F-You panel in support of the message, he will be speaking on his experiences in both the industry and his personal life.

It is highly suggested that those wishing to attend this F-YOU event arrive early as this event will reach capacity. This is a completely free event.

About F-YOU:

A panel of six people, a mix of race, age and gender, speaking about a time in their lives they had to forgive either themselves or another. The Forgiveness Project is an inviting, tell-all event that aligns personal growth with self-improvement. This event has the potential to impact our community and young adults by way of real-life portrayals of hardships, and overcoming barriers that at one point seemed insurmountable. Hearing first-hand trials and tribulations from people just like us can open the door to inspiration and the motivation to do better and most importantly, feel better. Included themes on the panel are murder, sexual assault, depression, drug-use and self-forgiveness.

The panel includes:

Wayne Barrow – manager (J.Cole, the late Notorious B.I.G) – keynote speaker

Katrina Lopes – manager (Shawn Desman) – Exploring our notions of forgiveness

J “Bizz” Brown – Creator, “Hip Hop’s Not Dead, It Lives In The North” – speaking on attempted suicide

Kamplex – speaking on the murder of her two brothers

Priscilla – speaking on the aftermath of an abusive relationship
