Halifax by way of St. Lucia rapper Kayo Guevarra drops “Apologies For The Wait”, mixed by DJ Little Row. This is definitely an ambitious attempt to converge the sensibilities of hip-hop with the vibes of the Caribbean. Peep the kid’s story below:

Music is what feelings sound like; and every once in a while, you come across someone who’s feelings speak fluently. These people sometimes hail from the most unlikely places; like the Caribbean island of St. Lucia.
Kayo (Kayo Guevarra) is no exception to that rule. Born into a loving family of five, Filbert ‘Kayo’ Salton grew up in the relatively middle class neighborhood of Ciceron in St Lucia. However, the area was ironically surrounded by a more impoverished environment. Through that living environment, Kayo became aware of many different facets of life at an early age.
Kayo has been honing his talent from the age of 12. He started out just writing poetry, but as he matured, so did his innate ability to paint vivid pictures with words and portray his thoughts and emotions through them. Often considered a ‘golden child’ to music in the Caribbean, his style is a unique one, fusing a raspy, edgy yet melodic voice with intensely potent lyrics and a hint of Caribbean flavor.
Kayo is a rare commodity coming out of the Caribbean. Although hip hop is a fairly popular genre among the islands, it is not one that is frequently and successfully practiced by the people themselves. This made his journey much harder and all the more interesting.
After attaining a tremendous level of success in his homeland, St. Lucia, and expanding his reach to the other Caribbean islands, He felt like he needed to transcend his music to a broader audience.
He then packed his bags and headed to Canada to pursue his career as an artist, while also working towards his degree in Marketing. He is currently attending St. Mary’s University. He is quickly becoming a hometown hero and a prodigy in the city which he currently resides.
