Social Experiment Reps

It’s a Jack Move! DJ Mensa Invades Moni’s Blog!

What up, it’s the dude DJ Mensa, reppin the megacity to the FULLEST! Your resident homegirl left her wordpress on while she was in the ‘middle’ of something , so I hijacked her spot for a second to inform all my music heads about the One Year anniversary of Toronto’s main Thursday night weekly, Social Experiment going on TONIGHT!!

We’ve also had the best guests that have come through to bless the tables: P-Plus, Sweet Touch, Grand Groove, as well as the release party for Rich Kidd’s latest tape, and so many more great occasions. All at no cost to the city at large.

For our big birthday jam, we’ve got none other than Stylus Canadian DJ of the Year WRISTPECT holding it down, so you can imagine the caliber of the music we’ve got in store for the people.

For everyone not in tune with what we do, lemme tell you what I told Moni:

I got the idea to start Social Experiment in 2008 because my previous Thursday night, Peachfuzz, had ended earlier that year and I took a hiatus from throwing my own events for a while. I got the itch after I got to spin a fill in set at Octapus one night. Once I found out the night was vacant, I assembled a team (shout to Jillicious and Notaurious) and plotted a course to be THAT party in the city that ran all the forgetten tunes from the old school and even this decade. After minimal promo, we had a great turnout that first night and I decided to keep it going. 52 weeks later, and the rest is history.

There are some parties that base their clientele on pretty faces, and others that rely on bar sales to get through the night. But at Octopus I’ll tell a dude straight up: if you’re not down for the MUSIC first and foremost, then you can see the door with a quickness. Above all, vibe is paramount. From the venue to the staff to the clientele, everything works when it’s supposed to. And the crowd is all connected: friends invite friends, who then invite friends, and so on. Some nights I’ve played to an empty room and others we’ve had nights triple capacity. Either way, so long as the vibe is there, you don’t even notice.
