When you experience Brendan Philip you know you are encountering an old soul.  A backbone of 88 Days, he is quiet and reserved with a lot to say.  Calm and serene, his music talks about young love and trying to navigate life. His sound is heavy with sentiment, but light footed.  It reminds me how confusing and torturous love is. It also reminds me of how much I like being there.  You’d say he has the sound of a folk singer with his guitar but Brendan Phillip started out as an MC, kicking rhymes in hallways back in his high school days…

Moni in the Middle…Interview with Ayo! Leilani

They call her the mama of 88 Days. My friends call her the next gen Jill Scott. We say “Ayo! Leilani, what you say g’yal?!”. Kenyan born Leilani got her extended name from hip hop notable KJ, also from the 88 Days of Fortune crew. This sweet voiced lady has a mighty presence on stage. She’s that calm and collect, tell it like it is type, singing straight from raw emotion.  As a little one she was making up songs with family in Africa, then later migrated to Canada and started up the west-end Toronto version of the “Cousins Band”…

Moni in the Middle of…D.O. (Art of Fresh) Interview with CIRAA

hyperadmin | Moni in the Middle | Monday, January 4th, 2010

If 2009 was the year of the GRIND, I can’t wait to see what fruits of labour will come through for 2010. One man who is for sure doing big things right from the jump this year has got to be D.O of Art of Fresh fame.  I recently connected with Aisha Wickham Thomas from the Canadian Independent Artists Association and she shared this interview with me.  D.O most definitely has his business game tight and shares some insight on the steps he’s taken to move up in Canada’s music scene and ‘Stay Driven’… (more…)

Toronto Women's Bookstore

For the past 36 years, the Toronto Women’s Bookstore has helped promote critical thinking and the empowerment of marginalized people and women in Toronto. The TWB survived a bombing in 1984, but is less likely to withstand the effects of the recession (and maybe a little too much sex and consequence on MTV–just saying, I love the guidos though!).

Saving one of Canada’s largest agents of print and alternative thought can cost as little as 10 bucks! Give the gift of knowledge this christmas. (more…)

Spent Factory Theatre

Last night I checked out a hilarious play starring my good friend and awesomely talented actor Ravi Jain, co-starring equally impressive Adam Paolozza.  This play goes through the trials and tribulations of the corporate world and it’s totally out of whack stance on our world economy.  Be prepared to ride a roller-coaster of emotions as you follow these two on their journey from the top of the ladder to the bottom…
