VIDEO: 1 To 4 (Toronto Hip-Hop Documentary)

hyperadmin | Video | Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

Wow. What can I say other than this is IT right here. So sick. Really dope piece put together by Wavel Edwards and Celine Wong paying homage to the famed 1pm-4pm timeslot on Saturdays on CKLN 88.1 FM. As someone who has contributed to Toronto’s hip-hop radio legacy I can truly say that all these people in this documentary are inspirations to us (I’m sure I can speak for Ty here also) and it is humbling to recognize their contribution to this city. Salute to you all! Here’s all the info:

Toronto Hip-Hop Documentary “1 to 4”

Toronto, March 28, 2011 – The most important three hours for hip-hop in Toronto has always been Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. on CKLN 88.1 FM. The impact of this musical institution is captured in the brand-new short documentary, “1 to 4.”

It all began back in 1983, when legendary radio host/concert promoter Ron Nelson first broadcast The Fantastic Voyage from Ryerson University’s campus, making it the first hip-hop radio show to exist anywhere in the nation. The timeslot continued to gain historical significance and cultural relevance with the three shows that followed – The Power Move Show, The Real Frequency and Mixtape Massacre. CKLN’s been rocking the airwaves and our eardrums for nearly 30 years, making it the longest-running source for hip-hop music in Canada.

On Saturday, February 12, 2011, a monumental gathering took place when all four generations of radio shows came together for a single broadcast. Thinking it would be their last, Mixtape Massacre invited their predecessors to each play one hour dedicated to the era of hip-hop they represented while they were on the air.

CKLN had its license revoked by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) at the end of January due to problems with how the radio station conducted its operations (Decision 2011-56). But the day before its last broadcast, CKLN was granted a stay, allowing the station to remain on the air pending a decision by the Federal Court of Appeal. The mood that Saturday quickly turned from somber to celebratory.

“1 to 4” is a six-minute documentary capturing the historic radio show that took place on February 12, 2011. It features footage and interviews with Canadian hip-hop legends Michie Mee, Ron Nelson, Thrust and DJ X, along with P-Plus, Arcee, DJ Linx and Big Jacks. Fans are taken into the studio and treated to interviews with the on-air hosts and DJs who helped shape our city’s musical identity.

We hope that this timeslot lives on forever. Without it, Toronto hip-hop will never be the same.

Timeline of Saturdays, 1-4 p.m. on CKLN 88.1 FM

Fantastic Voyage: 1983-1988

The Power Move Show: 1988-2000

The Real Frequency: 2001-2005

Mixtape Massacre: 2005-present

“1 to 4” is the first documentary produced by Wavel Edwards and Celine Wong. Edwards is a freelance editor who’s also known as Musiklee Inzane, a DJ for The Real Frequency radio show and Wong is a hip-hop journalist who wrote for The Source, XXL, Vibe and Rap Pages before becoming a TV producer/director. They’ve both spent plenty of time at CKLN’s studios on Saturdays from 1-4 p.m. and credit the timeslot for molding their musical tastes and knowledge.

HIPHOPCANADA SPOTLIGHT: RICH KIDD
We Still On Some Rich Kidd Shiiiit

Toronto, ON – On a rooftop in downtown Toronto, Rich Kidd is seated in an all white arm chair posing for pictures. He’s about to release his newest mixtape (We On Some Rich Kidd Shiiiit Volume 4), and continue a startling run at becoming one of the most talked about new artists coming from Canada.

The acclaimed photographer Ajani Charles adjusts his lens and snaps portraits against a lush green backdrop of plants. The sun beats down on Rich’s dark skin, insulated by a scruffy beard and unkempt afro of sorts. Somewhere between The Natural and Dr. Frankenstein, there`s Rich Kidd. And just like that, a summer day worthy of a BBQ turns into a stormy cloud of a sky and we take off for cover. It`s like night and day, all of a sudden. Kind of reminiscent of Rich’s resume over the last twelve months.

As we sift through a dozen songs produced by, written or featuring Rich, the range of his contribution to music crystallizes.

“I’m definitely trying to get to a place where I produce for more notable people and produce for more artistic people and broaden my horizon and my production value,” says Rich, now inside, yet once again seated on an all white arm chair.

The tale of the tape reads credits like Saukrates’ “I Wish I Knew Natalie Portman” featuring Nelly Furtado and kos, “Silly, Happy, Wild” by Tanika Charles, ” “The Last Hope” by Drake, Kardinal & Andreena Mill and countless others that didn’t see radio.

“A big moment for Rich was the Frank-n-Dank record,” says Courtney Uno who’s been building Rich Kidd and Ridgeway Entertainment Group since the second day they met. “He was 16 and got his first radio record. I remember being in Ridgeway the night before and we were like ‘You’re out now, you got your first radio love!’ We were just smoking and it felt like a step forward. And the fact that it was an American artist and he was only 16 changed a lot.”

VIDEO: Drake – Old Money Skit (Junos 2011)

hyperadmin | Video | Monday, March 28th, 2011

Shouts to Drizzy who I think did a great job as host last night. This skit was def one of the highlights (along with him serenading Shania Twain). Classic lol. Shouts to Shad who took home the Rap Recording of the Year award (which I think was a great look for Shad) but I do think Drake could have taken home one of the bigger awards later on in the show. When you look at the actual awards he was nominated for and who actually won though…I guess it’s hard to say. Ah well…he did his thing as host so that trumps winning an award in some ways.

The super-talented and inspiring Bryan Espiritu drops a dope trailer for his upcoming look at the who, what, wheres and whys that define his Ideall Clothing and The Legends League brands.

“The Legends League: a film by Eighteen Eighty” is the closest I’ve ever let anyone into my workspace and thoughts about The Legends League. It is arguably the rawest you’ll ever see me in the hustle for IDEALL and the most honest I’ve spoken about the origins of my passion for my work.

Directed by Eighteen Eighty.
