Super wack that the Rap category isn’t televised this year but alas…thus is the Junos. Anyways…CONGRATS going out to Shad for taking home a well deserved win for Rap Recording of the Year this year for his album TSOL. Blake Carrington’s verse on Famous’ A Kid Tryna Make It made me a new fan of his music. I realized how important it is for a new artist to come correct on everything they do because they can gain a new fan.
I kicked with Blake Carrington and his producer Ric Notes who has produced for Shad, Tona, Drake, and so much more. We talked about how they met, the importance of a first impression, and branding your art. Blake Carrington has a bright future and I’m excited to see his career grow. – Chedo
Shouts to the homie Chris for spearheading this whole CBC thing that’s going down this coming week at the national broadcaster’s headquarters (and online for the entire month of March). Def agreed that it’s great to see CBC doing an event on this scale. If you’re just catching wind of it now don’t worry it’s not too late to check it all out as the main (open to the public) stuff is happening on Friday, April 1st (more info on all that later this week). In the meantime, here’s some words from Chris himself (to add to the interview above).
On March 29th. 2011, history will be made celebrating history! Canadian Hip Hop History woth some of the biggest names in Canadian Rap music assembled on one stage, one night only.
CBC – Hip Hop Summit Concert What It Take’s
I was inspired to produce this historical concert because I am Hip Hop and believe it’s time for people to understand the profundity of this Canadian life style and celebrate the depth of musical history we have. The motivation came from the T Dot Pioneers exhibit that ran from March-April 2010 at the Toronto Free Gallery. It became the resonance of my love and passion for this genre of music and culture.
I wanted to somehow convey the History of Canadian Hip Hop through performances displaying content from the early 80’s onward, that helped shaped what Hip Hop is today in Canada. This would create awareness for Hip Hop as a Canadian art form that really needs to be respected on the same level as any other genre of music out there.
This concert is also an outreach to a large demographic that we haven’t fully connected with and once we (CBC) do, that particular audience can connect with the brand awareness of CBC and understand that CBC is theirs and unites all.
Though things may look as if we’re coasting, it wasn’t as easy as it may have seemed to be. Right from the get-go I was challenged but yet was very determined to make something happen and it has taken almost two years for it to get to this point. I had to make a proposal displaying this idea to CBC, and from there make it all happen. Going through change after change, finding an angle for the “wow” factor, pitching the idea to artists, agents and managers, slowly getting them booked, getting into arguments with artists as well as colleagues, who are all going above and beyond. Not to mention just the general organization of it all. It was a ton of work and is definitely not a 9-5 job but in the end, it’s all worth it. The rewards are going to be historical.
It’s impossible to portray everything to everybody but this Concert and Summit is a big deal for Hip Hop in Canada. The Country’s national broadcaster is putting all of its resources together to make this Summit happen and present it to a national audience, showcasing a history and culture that is distinctively Canadian. A 100% authentic and raw is exactly what I wanted and it’s exactly what is happening.
With that all in the works, I’ve already finished planning next year’s follow up. Stay tuned for all the things that will be taking place subsequent to this.

Grammy Award-winning producer Matthew Samuels has taken the music industry by storm, cranking out hits for Drake, Eminem and many more. Still, the Canadian beatsmith is thrilled at the possibility of going home with a Juno.

Given the hot streak he’s been on for the past two years – and the 2011 Grammys on his shelf – it’s kinda cool that Boi-1Da can still get excited about the Juno Awards.
With characteristic humility, the beatmaking producer from Toronto, born Matthew Samuels, says he’s honoured to be recognized in his home country.
He has credits on records nominated in four categories at this year’s show: Eminem’s Recovery (international album of the year), Drake’s Thank Me Later (album of the year and rap recording of the year) and Drake’s Fireworks (songwriter of the year).
For those keeping score, Thank Me Later was the eighth-highest-selling album of 2010. Recovery was number one. Boi-1da (pronounced Boy Wonder) produced Over, and Not Afraid, the lead singles on both. The latter has an astronomical 213 million-plus hits on YouTube.
According to Samuels, those figures represent vindication.
“Some people had doubts about me, thinking I was just lucky with the songs that were out before,” the 24-year-old says. “But they can see now it’s something I really work hard at, that I put my heart into, and it’s paying off.”
Next month, Rich Kidd, Famous, Page, Art Of Fresh and J Diggz will be performing in London, England as part of a new music conference poppin’ off over there called MusicConnex (shouts to Faron McKenzie for putting it all together). The showcase is called the Canadian Blast and to help promote DJ Shortee Blitz put together this likkle mixtape featuring the artists performing as well as some other of T.O.’s finest (Classified too – shouts to Hali!).
