  1. […] I’ve been meaning to put up something about JD Era since I started at B&B, and now I’ve got a good reason to post. JD is a Toronto emcee that the city’s hip-hop community has much love for, even after going on hiatus for a minute. I will be honest with you: JD is not a stellar lyricist, and therefore doesn’t put out material with strong retaining value (no shots, it’s just the facts). That being said, he is by no means a sub-average rapper and can ride a beat nicely. Th1RT3En drops this Friday and from what I’ve heard on the leaked side of things, it’s shaping up to be pretty good overall. JD already has the sick cover art and features from Drake and Saukrates, so at least he’s off to a good start. Catch the tracklisting and listen to to the latest leak, “You Know This” (sampling Rihanna’s “Hard”), after the jump. Via cityonmyback. […]

  2. After reading the comments from the unspecified person from B&B above, I have to say I strongly disagree. That sounds like you’re taking a shot at homie even though you say you’re not and you’re merely stating facts. My opinion is that you should probably listen again to some of Era’s material because I can’t understand where you’re coming from? What is your definition of a lyricist? Like Jay said ….do you listen to music or do you just skim through it?
His music has content to it and is not just bulls&%$#. I totally disagree with you and I think most of the city would too. (no shots, it’s just the facts homeslice!)

  4. Both comments above make valid points. First and foremost, Era has been reppin Toronto for a while now and is by far 1 of 2 best rappers coming out of Toronto. I dont need to mention the other because I think we all know who that is and if you dont then go ahead and take a look at the March 2010 GQ cover. Anyways, Era has an amazing flow and is extremely versatile when it comes to changing up the flow. He makes any beat sound better once he comes on it and dude straight up does an amazing job of telling a story and the punch lines are hot WHEN he wants to it to be…key word being “when”. Here comes the criticism…I feel like sometimes his lyrics are predictable and he settles for dumbing it down to cater for a certain type of listener….I wanna hear track like “First and Last” where we spits from the heart and thats what will connect with listeners, tracks like “Automatic” where he is bring a new flavour to the game, and even “Not Around”…Era does a great job of story telling on that track…I wanted to give examples from different mixtapes he has done, there are definitely more track that are nice…anyhow, I just feel like sometimes he compromises his lyrics and he comes of less grown. Era has the potential to raise above the noise of all these other rappers in Toronto who are straight up weak…he just has to do it, Listen to any track he comes on with other rappers…his verse is always the best, you can distinctly recognize that he has more talent then the rest….Era, gluck Homie tell a story they wont forget…and stop doin mixtapes with joker Dj’s, they are just holding you down.
