SEPTEMBER 9 – 12, 2010

YOUnited, Ontario Arts Council, Toronto Community Housing, Toronto Youth Cabinet & the Manifesto

YOUnited Neighbourhoods Festivals aims to redefine Scarborough and their Youth by showcasing and celebrating the cultural and artistic wealth they contribute to the city of Toronto. This year we will be helping Scarborough Youth shine by working with them to plan this years Scarborough Fresh Fair celebration. The event will take place over 4 days and will feature a multitude of activities including: The Fresh Fashion Film & Art Expo, the Battle of the Freshest Dance contest, Subtext Multi Arts festival and the popular Scarborough Fresh Fair celebration of Youth, Urban Arts & Culture.

DAY 1

THE FASHION PHOENIX (Free Event)

Thursday September 9, 5pm – 9pm

Scarborough Civic Centre: Rotunda Space

150 Borough Drive

Presented by:

A.N.A.S.A. Collective, YOUnited, TCHC, & OAC

The Scarborough Civic Centre rotunda space will be transformed into a youth art exhibit and will also feature a series of Fashion Installations created by the talented young women of the A.N.A.S.A. Collective.

It will feature performances from:
Kim Davis
Greg Drakes
DJ Mel Boogie  & more.

THE FRESH FILM & ART EXPO (Free Event)

Thursday September 9, 5pm – 9pm

Scarborough Civic Centre: Council Chambers

150 Borough Drive

Presented by:

OAC, Grassroots Youth Collaborative, Jane-Finch.com & Womynation

The Council Chambers Space will double as a theatre and will screen a slew of short films, video sketches, and one main feature film. KNOW YOUR RIGHTS.

Know Your Rights is a public legal education film that aims to provide people, and particularly youth in at-risk neighbourhoods, with: basic information about their rights when dealing with police; an understanding of powers of arrest, detention and search; strategies to deal with various situations relating to police contact; and an understanding of the recourse available when someone experiences an abuse of police power.

BATTLE OF THE FRESHEST:

2on2 B-Boy Battle, BBQ & Fundraiser

Friday September 10, 6pm – 12pm
Southside Muay Thai & Submission Gym

2115 Midland Ave Unit 4

Presented by:

YOUnited, Southside Muay Thai & Simply Swagg Dance Studios

Some of the city’s dopest dance duos will be assembled to battle in a boxing ring for the title of “Freshest Dance Duo” in the “DOT”. B-boys & B-girls will square off in this hard-hitting, head-spinning showdown for a prize worth up to $1000. The top 2 tandems at the event will battle in the final round the next day on the Free Show Main Stage.

There will also be a Popping n Tutting Battle. dancers will compete individually for a prize worth $500.

– A Mini-NBA2K10 Tournament ($5 buy-in)

SUBTEXT MULTI-ARTS FESTIVAL: Bridging Project

Saturday September 11 & 12, 11am – 4pm

East Scarborough Storefront & Under the Lawrence Avenue East Bridge

OAC, SAC, East Scarborough Storefront, Mural Routes, TO Live With Culture & The City of Toronto

YOUnited teamed up with the Scarborough Arts Council and their partners to add the Subtext Mutli-Arts Festival to the Scarborough Fresh Fair line up. This event will be a celebration of art and the community, above and below the Lawrence Avenue East brige. We will celebrating The Bridging Project with two days of FREE arts and community activities! Plus, youth music & dance Performances, mural Art, live Graffiti, Interactive painting, a FREE community BBQ, local vendors, artist demonstrations and MORE!
