Kahaniya

Dalit n. 1. A member of the lowest-caste relating to the traditional Hindu caste system – literally translating to “oppressed” or “broken”– is generally used to refer to people who were once known as “untouchables”.

2. A past passive participle of the Sanskrit root dal that means to crack or split. Also see Untouchable, Harijan and Scheduled Caste

KAHANIYA was able to teach photography and document the compelling narratives of Dalit communities, resisting caste oppression in Tumkur, India. This unique event is a fundraiser and the first time photography of Dalits taken by Dalit people will be exhibited in Toronto. Picking up the Pieces is a visual awakening to the 2500-year oppression of Dalit communities in south Asia and their fight towards freedom.

KAHANIYA is an international organization based out of Toronto, Canada that uses the arts as a medium to engage. We specifically use photography and film to document the narratives of women and children around the world, who do not always have the privilege to tangibly document their own testimonies. These powerful stories act as tools and have become workshops to further the understanding and dialogues communities can have when the idea of history is reflected not from a book, but from those who historically have been outside its pages.
