NEW ALBUM: Drake "Take Care" (Deluxe Edition)

Ty Harper | Album,Music | Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

Feels kinda weird writing up this whole spiel for “Take Care” considering most have already heard the whole album, but it’s important to point out a couple of things. Firstly, the kid has once again upped the CanCon ante, this time with all but one song not featuring local production from either 40, 1da, T-Minus, The Weeknd, Illangelo, Doc, Chantal Kreviazuk or Drake himself. Secondly “Take Care” is clearly an ALBUM: well thought out, programmed and conceived, from beginning to end – a rarity nowadays in this the personal-playlist/iTunes era. Finally, it’s just good to see kids still lining up outside HMV for an album they could’ve easily picked up online or later today. Clearly that feeling that comes with physically wanting to get your hands on a brand new album hasn’t completely died… yet. So the idea that one more generation of kids have just experienced a feeling many of us religiously looked forward to – or even took for granted – is worth highlighting and relishing, even vicariously. That the album, artist and producers responsible for this moment are homegrown is just the icing on the cake.

Congrats to Drake and his team for making Toronto history one mo’ gin.

#salute

NEW ALBUM: D-Sisive "Run With The Creeps"

Ty Harper | Album,Audio | Tuesday, November 15th, 2011

D-Sisive drops another highly impressive full-length offering and I can’t lie – I’ve kinda felt like this dude is getting super overlooked in more ‘traditional’ hip-hop circles within the city. I mean, to each his own – but I just feel it’s kind of weird that what this dude’s been putting out since ’08 hasn’t gotten more ‘true-school’ acknowledgment. Especially considering that he’s a product/student/member of the very era we hail as the last vestige of the golden age. Anyways congrats to D-Sisive and his team for dropping another dope release.

And now, a word from the man himself:

it’s 11:38pm. in 22 minutes i’ll be releasing my 6th album. run with the creeps.

i’m refusing to use capital letters.

the only lights in my apartment come from my television. last week’s episode of dragon’s den. on mute.

i don’t feel the same way i’ve felt on my previous release eves. over excited? jaded? tired? low expectations? i can’t figure it out. i know i’m proud of this album. that’s all that matters, i suppose.

today my label informed me theres has been a lot of pre-orders. i’ve never been one to sell a lot of albums. the news made me happy. my vancouver show was packed. my shows are rarely. things definitely seem to be picking up. i’m happy.

and now the favour. i hope you don’t mind me asking one of you. not a difficult one. if you choose not to, i understand. this album has had minimal to zero promotion. this is usually the case. something i’m used to. this time around i need your help. nothing fancy. if you feel up for it, please mention the release in a facebook status. or a tweet. or pass the bandcamp/iTunes link on to a friend. or two. and if you like the music, come visit me when i’m in your town. if you choose to grant me this favour, your effort officially makes us posse members. a band. creeps!

iTunes:

Bandcamp:
http://urbnet.bandcamp.com/album/run-with-the-creeps

if you tweet, please include the hashtag #Creeps

does this request seem desperate? maybe. what’s the worst that can happen? you refuse. i’ve been through worse! 😉 your help will not go unnoticed and will be greatly appreciated. keep the train moving forward.

will this album match drake’s sales? absolutely not. will it change my life? hopefully. but not drastically. it’s going to take a lot more and i have a lot more in me.

5 minutes till release!

if you’ll excuse me, i must tupperware tomorrow’s lunch. work at 9!

hope you enjoy Run With The Creeps.

Derek
@dsisive

NEW MUSIC: The 6th Letter – 4:20 AM

hyperadmin | Music | Monday, November 14th, 2011

Look, I even posted it on a #DopeAssMonday. Shouts to 6th mang. Dilla RIP.

The 6th Letter has released his latest single “4:20am” produced by the legendary J.Dilla. The track is featured on The 6th Letter’s side project entitled “Dope Ass Monday”.

Hailing from the city of the Raptors, the 19 year old up and coming rapper Kevon Samuels better known, as The 6th Letter is a promising new talent coming out of Toronto. 6th has been writing since the fourth grade, but has taken it seriously since the spring of ’09 and since then created a nostalgic sound that has remnants of the “boom bap” rap style, from the 90’s era with a new school twist. His style of rap has been recognized by the likes of Taylor Gang artist/producer Neako and has recruited 6th to his imprint The World Music Group and has been featured on Jonny Shipes “GoodTalk Vol. 9: Curb Your Enthusiasm” that was hosted by Big K.R.I.T. As well, 6th is the founder of his own collective called, Above The Rest ENT. The 6th Letter currently has two mixtapes out which are: “What The F?” and his latest release “Go Green” presented by The Smokers Club, The Goodie Bag Blog, and Goodfellamedia.com. “Go Green” is not only currently available for purchase on iTunes but is also an anti tobacco movement. In a short amount of time 6th Letter has been cosigned by the likes of Jonny Shipes, opened for Curren$y, Big K.R.I.T., Mac Miller, Smoke DZA, and has put out two mixtapes, the sky is the limit for this star on the rise and he is sure to make noise in the city of Toronto and beyond.
